Tauzin works on FCC org. reform

Legislation would limit agency's power

WASHINGTON __ House Telecommunications Chairman Billy Tauzin (R-La.) said organizational reform of the Federal Communications Commission is moving forward now that he has approval for his project from Republican leaders.

Commerce Committee Chairman Tom Bliley (R-Va.) gave Tauzin permission to begin drafting legislation aimed at curtailing the agency's power over regulated industries including broadcasting, cable and telephony. In 1994, the Republican majority entered Congress with an announcement that it would abolish the FCC along with several other agencies. That effort failed.

Tauzin met with FCC Chairman William Kennard last week to solicit his opinions on proposed reforms, according to Tauzin spokesman Ken Johnson. In addition, Tauzin said he would be soliciting opinions from the other four FCC commissioners.
