Maguire joins 'Wonder Boys'

Thesp cast opposite Douglas in Par drama

Tobey Maguire has been cast to star opposite Michael Douglas in the Paramount drama "Wonder Boys."

Joining a cast that also includes Robert Downey Jr. and Francis McDormand, Maguire will play a promising young novelist and student of Douglas' character.

Based on Michael Chabon's bestseller, pic follows a middle-age writer and professor (Douglas) who is way behind his deadline for the follow-up to his successful first novel.

Produced by Scott Rudin, "Wonder Boys" will be directed by Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential") from a script by Steve Kloves.

Maguire was last seen in "Pleasantville" and will soon appear in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" for Universal Pictures.

Maguire recently wrapped production on Lasse Hallstrom's "The Cider House Rules" with Charlize Theron, Paul Rudd and Michael Caine for Miramax.

Maguire is repped by Leslie Siebert of the Gersh Agency, Eric Kranzler of Industry Entertainment and Steve Warren of Hansen, Jacobsen, Teller & Hoberman.
