New pic a 'Stretch' for Brit helmer Care

Musicvid director makes feature debut in DeVito starrer

Peter Care, the Brit shooter behind music videos for such acts as R.E.M. and Bruce Springsteen, is in negotiations to direct the Danny DeVito starrer "Stretch Armstrong" for Disney.

Paul Schiff is producing and Doug Draizin is exec producing the feature spawned from the once-popular 15-inch children's toy that stretches to twice its size. DeVito is set to star (Daily Variety, March 11) as a bumbling, warmhearted scientist and father of two boys, whose life is altered when a potion intended to kill him instead gives him incredible stretching powers.

Disney is eyeing an August start date for "Stretch," which, during its long gestation at the studio, has had numerous writers, including the original scribes Mike Werb and Michael Colleary.

"Stretch" would mark the feature debut for Care, who, in addition to his numerous video credits, directed "Road Movie," the 90-minute, live-performance docu about rockers R.E.M.

He also is attached to direct two other films: the indie "Blur," which was written by Sarah Thorp and is being produced by Care's manager Simon Millar of the Firm and Jib Polhemus; and "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" which will be produced by Jodie Foster's Egg Pictures

Care's deal is being brokered by United Talent Agency and attorney Craig Emanuel.
