Daytime viewing levels usually spike during the last two weeks of December, as vacationing schoolkids and others have more leisure time to spend in front of the tube. Distribs are now hoping that the increased sampling over the holiday period will translate to sustained ratings growth in the weeks ahead.
Columbia TriStar's "Donny & Marie" jumped from a 1.4 national Nielsen household rating in the week of Dec. 14 to a 1.9 -- its highest number yet -- in the week of Dec. 28. Yet Nielsen's overnight metered market ratings for the current week have "Donny & Marie" settling back to its lower pre-holiday ratings perf, although the show was in reruns.
'Heart' a sleeper
The sleepers of the season, Warner Bros.' "Change of Heart" and Twentieth TV's "Forgive or Forget," both posted their highest household marks yet during the holiday period.
"Change" earned a 2.3 household average in the week of Dec. 28, up from a 2.1 the previous week. "Forgive" scored a best-yet 2.0 household average in the week of Dec. 21 and hung on with a 1.9 in the week of Dec. 28.
King World's "The Roseanne Show" moved from a 1.6 national household number in the week of Dec. 14 to a 1.8 for the week of Dec. 28. Paramount's "Howie Mandel" climbed 14% to a 1.6 in the week of Dec. 21, but eased 6% to a 1.5 in the week of Dec. 28.
Yakkers swing
Most of the established yakkers were also on the upswing in the week of Dec. 28. Studios USA's "Maury Povich" and "Sally Jessy Raphael" earned season-high marks with a 3.8 and 4.6, respectively.
The courtshow contingent remained strong over the holiday period, with Rysher Entertainment's "Judge Mills Lane" posting its highest household number yet (3.3) in the week of Dec. 28.
In the prime-access arena, shows that were battered by holiday or news-related preemptions in the week of Dec. 21 recovered with notable gains in the week of Dec. 28. King World's "Hollywood Squares" rose to a 4.0, up 14% from its low-water mark of a 3.5 the previous week.
Par's "Entertainment Tonight" led the buoyant magazine show field with a 27% spike to a 6.1 in the week of Dec. 28.
