The pay TV rights deal will kick off with "Elizabeth" and covers the rest of PFE's recent production lineup, including such big-hitters as "What Dreams May Come," "Notting Hill" and the Tom Hanks starrer "The Green Mile," as well as TV movies and TV series such as "The Crow" and "Stairway to Heaven."
The deal replaces a May 1997 pay TV output deal between PFE and Sogecable. Struck for Sogecable's digital platform, CanalSatelite Digital, that accord has now lapsed.
Ironically, the PFE-Via deal was brokered for PFE by Sogecable-owned distributor Sogepaq. Via is understood to have clinched the PFE package by offering a better price. CSD also has a strong movie offer following output deals with six U.S. majors.
The new PFE-Via deal underscores the step-by-step strengthening of Via Digital's movie lineup since Juan Ruiz de Gauna, himself a former Sogecable exec, was appointed CEO of Via Digital in April 1998. Since then, amid constant buzz of a possible platform merger between CSD and Via, the latter has signed output deals with MGM, New Regency and now PFE.
