Revamped tuner 'Guerre' ready for Stateside tour

Mackintosh prod'n to open in Minneapolis on Sept. 28

CHICAGO -- Following positive reviews in Leeds for the latest version of the Alain Boublil/Claude-Michel Schonberg tuner "Martin Guerre," the Cameron Mackintosh production is now on its way to the U.S.

The rejiggered tuner will premiere Stateside at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis on Sept. 28, Mackintosh told Daily Variety on Thursday. The show will then likely tour Boston, Washington (where it will hit the Kennedy Center around Christmas), Chicago and Toronto before arriving at an as-yet-unnamed Broadway house in March 2000.

Revamped to critical acclaim

The musical, which first opened in the West End in 1996, has been the subject of renewed attention this December, after a largely new creative team revamped it to widespread critical praise at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds (Stephen Clark now shares credit for the lyrics with Boublil). The show had previously been revamped and reopened once during its London run.

The new director-choreographer team of Conall Morrison and David Bolger are on board for the American incarnation of this romantic tale of mistaken identity in 16th century France. The show is likely to be entirely recast on this side of the Atlantic. John Napier is the set designer.
