CNBC ups Hoffman

Vet named managing editor, business news

NEW YORK -- CNBC has promoted Mark Hoffman to managing editor of business news.

The job had been filled on a temporary basis for the past year by Bruno Cohen, senior VP of business news for CNBC.

CNBC views the managing editor as "charged with setting the editorial direction for the network and deploying the resources of The Wall Street Journal and CNBC."

Hoffman was executive producer of the daily 4-p.m.-to-7:30-p.m. program block, which jumped 49% in the Nielsen ratings since he took the assignment 20 months ago.

CNBC's other executive producers, David Friend and Kevin Magee, will temporarily fill Hoffman's old slot until the network hires a new executive producer. Friend and Magee will continue to report to Cohen.

Cohen filled the managing editor's job on July 6 of last year when he hired Jeffrey Rothfeder, whose most recent post was news editor for Bloomberg News, but a week later Cohen canceled the appointment with no explanation.

Before Hoffman joined CNBC he was VP and G.M. of KDNL-TV St. Louis. He had previously served as news director of KNBC Los Angeles, WBBM Chicago and WAGA Atlanta.
