Oscar ballots go out

Current membership tallied

Oscar nomination ballots will be mailed today to the 5,467 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Nomination polls close Jan. 29; noms are announced Feb. 9, with final ballots mailed March 2 and awards handed out March 21. Since Acad membership always changes (annual net gain is roughly 150 members), the 5,467 figure will change before final ballots go out.

As of this week, the voting membership by Academy branches is: Actors: 1,306; art directors: 342; cinematographers: 159; directors: 351; executives: 398; film editors: 209; music: 245; producers: 452; public relations: 349; shorts: 308; sound: 388; visual effects: 183; writers: 393; members at large: 384.

Though there are 6,209 members of the Academy, 742 of them don't hold voting privileges. "These are either associate or retired members,'' said spokesman John Pavlik.
