Poll: Poles trust pubcaster

Opinion Research sez public thinks TVP is more balanced

WARSAW -- Polish pubcaster TVP is getting higher marks for objective coverage of the news, a recent survey shows.

Despite left-right parliamentary infighting over the board of Polish public television, Poland's Center for Opinion Research says the public thinks TVP is less biased than it used to be.

Before the fall of communism in 1989, TVP had been a government organ. Now 63% of those polled think TVP offers a balanced picture. Those with strong political affiliations on either side of the spectrum, however, still distrust TVP. But blue-collar males under age 29 who live in small- to medium-sized cities find the pubcaster to be particularly unbiased.

Those respondents with more education and money believe TVP is more right wing, an opinion at odds with the ruling Solidarity Party's claim that TVP is still under the control of the left.
