Dolby sounds out Rast as electronic media VP
HDTV proponent to o'see new business development
Rast, a leader in the push to establish a high-definition TV standard, will be responsible for new business development in related emerging technologies, including digital cinema. He reports directly to Dolby president Bill Jasper.
In the early 1990s Rast led efforts to make General Instrument's HDTV system the U.S. broadcast standard. When competing systems united to back a single standard in 1993, Rast became one of the leaders of the Digital HDTV Grand Alliance, which eventually became the basis for the digital TV broadcast system.
Rast's resume
Before joining GI, Rast spent seven years as a senior VP with American TV & Communications, the cable TV division of Time Inc. Before that, he spent 11 years at RCA's Consumer Electronics Division.
Rast, who holds 11 issued patents, accepted on behalf of General Instrument an engineering Emmy in 1997 awarded to Grand Alliance member companies.
