Jarre to score 'Sunshine'

Alliance Atlantis pic stars Fiennes

MONTREAL -- Three-time Oscar-winning composer Maurice Jarre has been tapped to pen the score for the upcoming Ralph Fiennes starrer "A Taste of Sunshine," the latest pic from Hungarian helmer Istvan Szabo ("Mephisto").

The epic film is a production of Alliance Atlantis Communications and Serendipity Point Films, and it is set to wrap principal photography in Budapest on Saturday. Penned by Szabo and Israel Horovitz, it tells the tale of a family that rises from humble origins to a position of wealth and power, only to fall victim to the turmoil associated with the major events of modern European history, notably the fascist movement, World War II, and the post-War Communist era.

French composer Jarre has more than 120 films to his credit and he is best-known for his Academy Award-winning collaborations with British director David Lean on the pics "Lawrence of Arabia," "Doctor Zhivago" and "A Passage to India." Jarre has also worked frequently with Australian director Peter Weir, penning the scores for "Fearless," "Dead Poets Society," "Mosquito Coast," "Witness" and "The Year of Living Dangerously." Jarre also won Golden Globe Awards for his work on "A Walk in the Clouds" and "Gorillas in the Mist."

"He's one of the greatest composers of our time and a perfect fit for the scale, sweep and intensity of this film," said Serendipity Point Films topper Robert Lantos, who is producing "A Taste of Sunshine."

The film co-stars William Hurt, Molly Parker ("Kissed"), Rosemary Harris ("Hamlet"), Jennifer Ehle ("Wilde"), Rachel Weisz ("Stealing Beauty") and Deborah Kara Unger ("The Game"). Alliance Pictures Intl. is handling global sales on the project, with Alliance Releasing set to distribute in Canada and the U.K. The pic has not been sold in the U.S. yet.
