Gijon fest adopts 'Orphans'

Confab attendance up

MADRID -- Adding to its brace of prizes at the Venice Festival, "Orphans" triumphed at the Gijon Intl. Film Festival, which wrapped Nov. 28.

Directed by Peter Mullan, the pic took the film and actor awards, the latter won by Gary Lewis.

"Orphans" faced stiff competition from an Official Selection lineup, which, by common consent, was the strongest in the four years under the direction of Jose Luis Cienfuegos.

According to Cienfuegos, attendance was up this year to some 50,000 admissions. A new feature is the growing presence of Spain's hipper distribbers.

Sharing out other top plaudits, Thomas Vinterberg's Cannes winner "The Celebration" took the director award, while the Special Jury Prize went to Aktan Abdykalikov's "Beshkempir." Fest highlights included tributes to Paul Morrissey and Karel Reisz.
