C&W sees stampede for shares

Feevee/telephony group jumps into Aussie top 10

SYDNEY -- Cable & Wireless Optus became one of Australia's top 10 listed companies following a stunning IPO and Tuesday debut on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).

The feevee/telephony group's $1.18 per share retail offering closed nine times oversubscribed, and a $1.38 per share institutional offering closed 15 times oversubscribed after an 11-nation roadshow by chief exec Chris Anderson. About 40% of shares went to Aussies, 30% to Americans and 30% to the rest of the world.

The stampede for shares was followed by a robust ASX debut. Shares closed at $1.70, giving Optus a market capitalization of $6.1 billion and delivering paper profits of $1.8 billion to shareholders.
