GlobeCast plans Miami soundstage

$7 million center skedded for Q3 '99 construction

MIAMI -- GlobeCast North America, the France Telecom-owned satellite and TV service provider, is planning a $7 million broadcast center that will house Miami's largest soundstage.

Project is part of a $50 million expansion in which GlobeCast will upgrade its facils in Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., making them digital and HDTV-compatible.

Of that, $18 million is destined for Miami, where GlobeCast is the principal uplink site for cabler programmers beaming into Latin America.

An initial $7 million will be plowed into a new production studio, to be finished by third quarter 1999 and featuring a 19,000-square-foot soundstage, divisible into two and served by two control rooms.

GlobeCast North America CEO Bob Behar said the Miami expansion owes to an ongoing influx of Latino-directed cable programmers and satcasters into South Florida.

A further $11 million earmarked for Miami will be spent to tailor facils to customers' specific needs over the next three years, as demand dictates.
