L.A. meets 'Joe Black'

Helmer lauds 'exposed perfs'

Perhaps it was the food at the party after Tuesday's West Coast premiere of Universal's "Meet Joe Black," but director Martin Brest was in the mood for a food analogy.

He was talking about his actors' work, which he describes as "exposed performances,'' and he used nouveau cuisine as a comparison.

"You know how they'd serve one piece of something on a very bare plate and that one piece of whatever better be of very high quality because it wasn't smothered in something? Well the nature of this film is there's not a lot of technique that covers the actors. It's just them working.''

Those who came to the Motion Picture Academy's theater to be exposed to the film included Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields, Ben Stiller, Donny and Marie Osmond, Jason Patric, Helena Bonham Carter, Madeline Stowe, Elizabeth Perkins, Steve Stabler, and studio execs Ron Meyer, Casey Silver, Chris McGurk and Marc Shmuger.

The Middle-East International Film Festival kicks off this fall.
