DGA announces winners of Student Film Awards
Prizes to be presented Nov. 9
The awards, which bring prizes of as much as $2,500 along with Kodak film stock, are designed to honor outstanding minority and women film students from California film schools and other universities.
The prizes will be presented Nov. 9 at DGA headquarters in Los Angeles following screenings of the winning films. Event is open to the public.
Winners, selected from about 100 entries, are:
- In the African-American category: co-winner, Shandra McDonald, of Howard University, for "Claudia Makes a Difference"; co-winner, Christa Collins, San Francisco State University, "She Smokes"; honorable mention, Sylvain White, Pomona College, "Urban Short Circuit Mind Scrape."
n Asian/Pacific: co-winner, Fatimah Tobing Rony, UCLA, "Demon Lover"; co-winner, David Kiang, UCLA, "Tunnel Vision"; honorable mention, Chesley Chen, USC, "Paper Birds."
- Latino: honorable mention, Kristy Guevera-Flanagan, San Francisco State U., "El Corrido de Cecilia Rios"; honorable mention, Mauricio Ammirata, Columbia College-Hollywood, "Little Warriors."
- Women: winner, Barbara Schock, AFI, "My Mother Dreams the Satan's Disciples in New York"; honorable mention, Marni Banack, AFI, "John."
The awards rules stipulate that competing films must have been made in the 1997-98 school year and must have been produced for course credit or under the supervision of a faculty member. Dramas, documentaries and experimental films are all eligible; animated films are not.
