Nicholl nod to five scripters

Beginning writers nab $25,000 prizes

At least a handful of beginning screenwriters are making money in Hollywood.

Five new scribes have been selected to receive the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' 1998 Don and Gee Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowships. Each will receive $25,000.

Jacob A. Estes, Robert H. Gyde, Donna McNeely, Karen M. Moncrieff and Michael A. Rich will be honored at a gala dinner in Beverly Hills on Nov. 12 at which Curtis Hanson will be the featured speaker.

The fellowship competition was open to any individual who had not sold or optioned a screenplay or teleplay for more than $1,000, or received a fellowship or prize that includes a "first look" clause or an option involving the writer's work. Fellowships were awarded with the understanding that the recipients will complete a feature-length screenplay in the next 12 months.
