'Newlywed's take the plunge in Latin America

Col pushing gameshows in LatAm, backing 'Boss'

MIAMI -- Already hot in Chile, newlyweds are now making a splash in neighboring Argentina.

Columbia TriStar Intl. TV's "The Newlywed Game" started its second Chilean season on Sunday in the 10 p.m. slot on TV Nacional (Canal 7).

In Argentina, a separate version, stripped at 3pm, debuted the following day on Telefe (Canal 11) and "got a 40% share on its first day," CTIT's Latino managing director Dorien Sutherland told Daily Variety.

Format push

Known locally as "Tal para cual," the format is part of a major push by Col TriStar to milk its gameshow properties in Spanish-lingo arenas.

A U.S. Hispanic version of the show, "Los Recien Casados," debuted alongside another format, "Buscando Pareja" (The Dating Game), on broadcaster Telemundo Sept. 21, as a 4 p.m.-5 p.m. daily block.

Sutherland said the "Newlywed" format is eliciting interest from broadcasters in several other Latino territories, and talks are ongoing in Colombia.

Elsewhere in Latin America, Col TriStar is co-producing with TV Azteca a version of "Who's the Boss?" which bowed in Mexico in August and on Telemundo last week.
