CBS is expected to begin announcing the on-air lineup for the new version of the war-horse newsmag within the next few days, according to news division insiders. As expected, "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather will be among the core correspondents for "60 II" (Daily Variety, July 6), with at least five Rather-reported pieces expected to be in the can by the end of the year.
CBS News correspondents Bob Simon and Vicki Mabrey and PBS talkshow host Charlie Rose will also be among the show's five regular correspondents, though final deals have yet to be inked.
Simon will continue to be an occasional contributor to the Sunday edition of "60 Minutes," while Rose is expected to continue fronting his nightly PBS talker, insiders say. Despite reports to the contrary, Rather will remain host of CBS' "48 Hours" for the foreseeable future, sources added.
Courting Chris Wallace
CBS News execs are still hoping to land ABC News "20/20" reporter Chris Wallace for the fifth regular correspondent slot on "60 II," with insiders reporting some positive momentum Thursday toward achieving that goal. Wallace, son of original "60 Minutes" star Mike Wallace, is under contract to ABC for at least another year, which means the Alphabet web would have to let Wallace out of his deal early.
If CBS can't land Wallace, insiders say Marin is a strong candidate to land the fifth correspondent slot on "60 II." Other names mentioned as possible occasional contributors to the show include Harry Smith, Peter Van Sant and Richard Schlesinger.
"60 Minutes II" is expected to launch during the first quarter of 1999.
