AMPAS opens in Manhattan

Wilson to staff Sixth and West 44th St. branch

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to take Manhattan -- or at least open an office there.

AMPAS today will open an administrative office at Sixth Avenue and West 44th Street, to be staffed by Richard Wilson.

"The number of members in the area and the number of events scheduled each year have pushed the Academy beyond what it's fair to ask our members to handle without staff help," said executive director Bruce Davis.

As examples of these activities, the Academy points to regular screenings for the 600 East Coast members at the Museum of Modern Art, nominee voting screenings, retrospectives and the annual New York Oscar night party.

Davis summed it up this way: "We've decided to provide our New York members with the kind of staff support that Los Angeles-area members take as a matter of course."
