Pic is first for Black & Blu

Jennifer Love Hewitt, the fright-pic ingenue from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and its pending sequel, has inked a deal with Columbia Pictures to produce and star in an untitled pitch dubbed "a 'Love Story' for the '90s."

Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal of Black and Blu Entertainment will produce the pic with Hewitt.

Columbia is planning to shoot the project in May 1999 during Hewitt's next hiatus from the Fox network's "Party of Five," in which she's a regular.

Scribe Liz Nickels, who made the pitch to Col exec VP Matt Tolmach, will pen the screenplay as well as a novel based on the material.

Pitch was described as the story of a young woman who learns she has only a few months to live. As she begins living out her dreams, she falls in love.

Columbia prexy Amy Pascal said the studio was eager to set up another project with Hewitt, who has been testing very well on "I Still Know."

Pic will mark the first production foray for startup Black and Blu Entertainment, which has a deal with Sony. Black and Blumenthal, former Mandalay Entertainment execs, were both involved in the original "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and its sequel.

Hewitt's other credits include "Can't Hardly Wait."

Nickels is a novelist whose works include "Hype," "Girls in High Places," "Baby, Baby" and the nonfiction piece "The Coming Matriarchy."

William Morris Agency rep Todd Harris and Ames Cushing brokered the deal for Nickels and Hewitt. Attorney Bob Wallerstein at Armstrong & Hirsch also handled the deal.
