Sondervan to pick pix for Independent

Exec moves over from Miramax

TORONTO -- Sofia Sondervan has joined Cary Woods' new company, Independent Pictures, as director of acquisitions.

Sondervan was most recently director of business affairs/delivery administration at Miramax Films, where she negotiated delivery schedules for acquisitions and productions including "Il Postino," "Trainspotting," "The English Patient" and Kevin Smith's upcoming "Dogma."

Indie mandate

At Independent, Sondervan will be responsible for acquiring films by indie filmmakers. She will work closely with Woods, who produced such films as "Kids," "Scream," "Citizen Ruth," "Cop Land" and "Gummo."

"Sofia's passion for finding new talent and her ability to build strong relationships with up-and-coming directors and producers will prove to be a valuable addition to Independent Pictures," said Woods, who is in Toronto for the film festival.

Sondervan will be based in New York and will attend all major film festivals.

Formed by Woods in May, Independent Pictures has a 20-picture, five-year agreement with New Line Cinema, which is also an investor in the company. Independent will produce or acquire four to six films annually.
