Indie film orgs hand nods to film students

NEW YORK -- Columbia University student Perry Lin is the grand prize winner of IFC2000, the first national student film competition sponsored by the Independent Feature Project and the Independent Film Channel.

Lin will receive a $10,000 cash prize and $10,000 in Eastman Kodak products for the short "17 Years to Earth," which explores the question, "What will stop Kathy Chu from lying in her diary?"

Masahiro Sugano, a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was honored for outstanding achievement-animation. Sugano will take home $2,500 in cash for the animated documentary "Hisao," the real-life story of a Japanese singer/songwriter who has been pursuing his dream in a foreign country for 25 years.

Outstanding docus

Kristy Guevra-Flanagan of San Francisco State University and Randolph A. Benson of the North Carolina School of the Arts will share a $2,500 cash prize for outstanding achievement-documentary.

Guevra-Flanagan was honored for "El Corrido de Cecelia Rios," about a community grappling with the death of a popular student, while Benson was recognized for "Man & Dog," which follows an animal control officer in a community overrun with stray pets.

The winners will be presented with their awards and their films will screen on Sept. 19 during the IFP's Independent Feature Film Market at the Angelika Film Center in New York. Pics will unspool in Los Angeles on Oct. 1 and will air on the Independent Film Channel later this year.
