The original 1963 feature, titled "The Haunting," was helmed by Wise, and starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn. Pic is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name about a group of people who gather in an old house to figure out whether a ghost is lodged within.
No talent is attached to the De Bont version yet. DreamWorks is planning to get the project into production as soon as possible, with a tentative release date of Christmas 1999.
Susan Arnold and Donna Roth of Roth/Arnold Prods. are producing. David Self is scripting.
DreamWorks head of production Robert Cooper and development exec Paul Lister are overseeing the project.
De Bont has helmed such big-ticket action pics as "Speed" and "Twister." His Blue Tulip Prods. has a raft of projects in development at 20th Century Fox, where the company is based.
Self's credits include the indie pics "Vertical Run," "Gates of Fire," "Coup D'Etat" and "13 Days."
David Gersh and Richard Arlook of the Gersh Agency are representing De Bont in the deal.
