Propaganda's 'Match' lit

Soccer comedy greenlit; Beesley, Sizemore, Holm, Grant on board

Propaganda Films has greenlit the soccer comedy "The Match," with Max Beesley, Richard E. Grant, Tom Sizemore and Ian Holm heading an ensemble cast.

Polygram-owned Propaganda is fully backing the low-budget pic, the directorial debut of former soccer coach Mick Davies.

London-based Rafford Films' Allan Scott and Propaganda's Guyman Casady are producing, and Propaganda chief Steve Golin is exec producing. Davies wrote the screenplay.

"The Match" is a dramatic comedy about two Scottish pub soccer teams who agree to play each other in order to resolve a century-old grudge. Whoever wins the game gets to keep the other team's pub.

Working-class heroes

Laura Fraser, David O'Hara, Bill Patterson and Neil Morrisey round out the cast of the pic, described as a story in which the working class triumphs over the establishment, in the vein of "The Full Monty."

Polygram specialty unit Gramercy Pictures will distribute in the U.S. Polygram Film Intl. will distribute everywhere else.

Scott, a former chairman of Macallan Distillery, is one of Scotland's best-known screenwriter/producers. His writing credits include Nicolas Roeg's classic 1973 thriller "Don't Look Now," Disney's Denzel Washington/Whitney Houston vehicle "The Preacher's Wife" and Richard Attenborough's "In Love and War."

He also wrote and co-produced Gilles Mackinnon's "Regeneration" and executive produced Ferdinand Fairfax's "True Blue."

Upcoming Propaganda titles are "A Long Way to Paradise," starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix, and "Being John Malkovich," starring Malkovich, John Cusack, Catherine Keener and Cameron Diaz.

"The Match" is shooting on location near Glasgow, Scotland.
