CineAsia to fete Lark's Kaye

Exec's philanthropy recognized

SYDNEY - Ira Kaye, one of Asia's multiplex pioneers and the founder of Hong Kong-based Lark Entertainment, will receive the Humanitarian Award at the CineAsia movie convention in Hong Kong on Dec. 8-10.

In 1983 Kaye opened the first multiplex cinema in Shatin, Hong Kong, which has expanded to 10 screens. Lark now operates more than 30 theaters in the former colony and has cinemas in mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore.

For more than 30 years, Kaye has been involved in a variety of charities, mostly relating to children. Among his good deeds, he has served with organizations that immunize children against polio and brought orphans from Macau to Hong Kong to repair split lips and open palates.

"Ira is incredibly deserving of this award. His efforts have influenced the lives of so many individuals, and he is a shining example of the good that members of our industry are capable of doing," CineAsia co-managing director Jimmy Sunshine said.

The fifth in the series of CineAsia confabs moves to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center for the first time after being based in Singapore. It will feature screenings of new films, seminars and an equipment and concessions trade show.
