Diaz joins dark side in 'Malkovich'

Thesp continues hot streak with role in black comedy

Cameron Diaz has joined the cast of Propaganda Films' dark comedy "Being John Malkovich."

Pic stars Malkovich, John Cusack and Catherine Keener in the story of a puppeteer (Cusack) who finds a porthole that leads to Malkovich's brain.

Diaz plays Cusack's wife.

Commercials and musicvid director Spike Jonze is making his feature helming debut on the pic, which begins shooting July 20.

Propaganda chairman Steve Golin is producing, alongside Propaganda's Vincent Landay and Single Cell Pictures' Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe. Polygram Filmed Entertainment will distribute worldwide.

Charles Kaufman wrote the screenplay.

Diaz' current hot streak encompasses the forthcoming black comedy "There's Something About Mary," from the Farrelly brothers. Twentieth Century Fox releases the pic Wednesday.

Later this year, she appears in another dark comedy from Polygram, the Peter Berg-directed "Very Bad Things." Polygram releases the pic, which also stars Christian Slater, in November.

Diaz begins shooting Oliver Stone's football drama "Any Given Sunday," opposite Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid and Sean (Puffy) Combs, for Warner Bros. this fall.

ICM's Nick Styne and Industry Entertainment's Rick Yorn repped Diaz.
