Dreyfuss joins 'Lansky' gang

Thesp to play Jewish mob boss in HBO pic

HBO Pictures has signed veteran actor Richard Dreyfuss to play Jewish mob boss Meyer Lansky in the cabler's upcoming original film "Lansky."

Production is scheduled to begin in and around Los Angeles on Aug. 19.

John McNaughton ("Wild Things," "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer") will direct from a script written by David Mamet.

Fred Zollo and Nick Paleologos ("Ghosts of Mississippi") are executive producers on the project and Fred Caruso ("Casualties of War," "Blue Velvet") is the producer.

"Lansky" is based on the true story of Meyer Lansky, a young Jewish immigrant who grew up in the streets of New York at the turn of the century and turned to a life of crime.
