Lowe to spin tunes in indie 'Statistics'

Pic marks bow for Zephyr

Rob Lowe is in talks to star in the disc jockey drama "Statistics."

The indie pic, which begins lensing in September, is the first project from the new production company Zephyr Entertainment, a partnership between indie film producers/execs B.J. Davis, Justin Carroll, Eric Brenner and Keri Ann Kimball.

"Statistics" is an ensemble drama about a D.J. who witnesses a murder and is subsequently propelled on a personal journey to change his life. Lowe plays the D.J.

Zephyr's Davis and Carroll will produce "Statistics," together with Freelance Prods.' Mark Atienza. James Hickox will helm the pic, which is budgeted at around $2 million.

According to Carroll, Zephyr, which is based in Los Angeles, will make both feature films and TV programming. Zephyr has no connection with a U.K. company of the same name.

The four principals, who are all equal partners in the venture, aim to produce several features a year, all costing less than $10 million, and at least one TV series.

The production budget of "Statistics" is being funded by private equity. Carroll said that Zephyr would remain focused on production and that another company likely would distribute its pics.

"Statistics" will be Hickox's third film. His other feature credits are "Children of the Corn III" and the upcoming "The Gar-dener," starring Malcolm McDowell and Angie Everhart.

Lowe's credits include "Hotel New Hampshire," "St. Elmo's Fire," "Masquerade," "About Last Night," "Bad Influence" and "Wayne's World." He is repped by UTA.
