'Magic' lures shock jock Stern to show
Producers hoping fans will follow suit
Stern has been ridiculing the new syndie latenight strip and its host, NBA great Earvin (Magic) Johnson, on his nationally syndicated radio show since "The Magic Hour" debuted with unimpressive ratings last month.
Now, "Magic" producers are looking to turn lemons into lemonade by luring the shock jock, and hopefully the viewership of Stern's loyal cadre, onto Thursday night's show.
Stern is expected to yuk it up by performing the Surfaris' 1963 surf instrumental "Wipeout" with his band, the Losers -- complete with percussive gas-passing sound effects supplied by band members.
In other "Magic" news, comedian Craig Shoemaker has been yanked from his role as Johnson's wisecracking sidekick.
Reps for "Magic" distrib Twentieth TV chalked the change up to a lack of "chemistry" between Shoemaker and Johnson, but Shoemaker surely didn't help his cause by blasting the show in print and radio interviews earlier this week -- before he was officially let go.
