The dark story is an adaptation of the comic book of the same name by Jason Lutes. Ernie Weiss, a young man in search of an answer to his brother's mysterious death, meets Flosso the Magnificent, Houdini's mentor, who introduces him to a strange and magical world.
Aurora's deal with Meyers gives it all feature and ancillary rights to the franchise-potent property. Meyers also is likely to star in the pic.
"I always have had a great interest in magicians and their secret world," said Stuart. "This comic book does a terrific job of blending magic, romance and a dark thriller into one compelling story."
Stuart and Aurora's Al Septien will produce. Aurora partner Turi Meyer ("Sleepstalker") will direct.
Stuart said that the Meyers' screenplay is in "pretty good shape" and Aurora would set about packaging the project straight away. "Jar," said Stuart, is likely to be a "reasonably budgeted independent film" and not a huge studio pic.
Aurora currently is developing the romantic thriller "The Deep Blue" for New Line Cinema, with Dwight Little ("Free Willy 2") attached to direct.
Stuart exec produced "The Rock" and produced Leonard Nimoy's "Holy Matrimony."
Meyers, a former stage actor, made his own deal with Lutes and then brought the project to Aurora. Stuart repped his company in its negotiations.
