Alliance taps Gagnon

Exec slides into Vivafilm prexy slot

MONTREAL -- Alliance Communications announced Wednesday that Guy Gagnon has been appointed president of Alliance Vivafilm, the company's Quebec theatrical distributor.

Alliance's Quebec operation has been short on senior executives since Alliance vice chairman Victor Loewy moved to Alliance's Toronto head office just over a year ago and Alliance vice president Pierre Brousseau ankled the company to join rival Behaviour Distribution as a senior VP.

Gagnon has just left his position as senior VP of Cineplex Odeon Quebec, the local division of the Toronto-based exhibitor. The hiring of Gagnon is part of Alliance's strategy to win back its license to distribute pics in Quebec.

The company, Canada's largest domestic film distrib, had its license revoked late last year by the provincial Regie du Cinema, which ruled that effective control of the Quebec operation was centered in Toronto.

Quebec's cinema law states that local distribs must have their head office in the province.

Alliance also announced Wednesday that it will be going back to the Regie in early May to attempt to renew its license.
