MEXICO CITY -- Actors Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith will co-produce film adaptations of six short stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Their Green Moon Prods. has signed a co-production agreement with Mexico City-based Tutor America Prods., which holds the rights to six unpublished works by the Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author.
Garcia Marquez will have approval over the scriptwriters and the director, Tutor prexy Antonio Pozueco told Daily Variety. A native of Spain who now works in Mexico and Cuba, Pozueco previously collaborated with the author in the early '90s on several films for Spanish TV.
"We may do an anthology approach, either for cable or theatrical," said Diane Sillan, president of Green Moon Prods., which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Green Moon will seek some way to link together the stories, which are six separate concepts, she said.
The producers are also weighing whether to film in English or Spanish. "We may do both," Sillan said.
Green Moon will take the lead in the United States to drum up financing, while the two partners will likely collaborate in other markets.
Tutor America already has a relationship with Cartel, a leading producer in Spain with good contacts in broadcast and pay TV. Tutor and Cartel are currently co-producing "Hijos del Viento" under direction of Spaniard Jose Miguel Juarez.
Green Moon is in pre-production for its first feature, Columbia Pictures' "Crazy in Alabama," directed by Banderas, who will star along with wife Griffith. Filming is scheduled to start in two weeks.
Griffith will also star in a CBS sitcom this fall, to be produced by Witt-Thomas and CBS Prods. in association with Green Moon.
