HOLLYWOOD -- Singer George Michael was arrested late Tuesday for allegedly committing a lewd act in the restroom of Will Rogers Park across from the Beverly Hills Hotel.
According to Beverly Hills Police, Michael was alone in the restroom at the park on Sunset Boulevard when an undercover officer saw him allegedly commit the act Tuesday evening.
Police Dept. spokesman Lt. Ed Kreins declined to go into details of the act or the arrest and the police report was sealed. He also specifically declined to say whether Michael had exposed himself or masturbated in the restroom.
Kreins said Michael, who was arrested outside of the park, did not proposition the officer. Michael lives about a mile from the park and the hotel.
He was handcuffed and taken to BHPD HQ where he was booked for investigation of misdemeanor lewd conduct and re-leased after posting $500 bail. His is scheduled for arraignment in BH Municipal Court on May 5.
The park had been under police surveillance by plain clothes officers following complaints of lewd conduct at the park. On the day of Michael's arrest, another man also was arrested for investigation of lewd conduct at the same restroom in an unrelated incident, Kreins said.
Michael was not immediately recognized by police. He gave the arresting officer his real name, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, and only later supplied his stage name and said he was a singer, Kreins said.
Michael's solo album "Older" was DreamWorks Records' first release and followed an expensive deal which extracted the singer from his recording pact with Sony Music. Michael had sued the conglom to get out of his deal, but lost at trial.
