Planet going to the dogs

Web bows pooch show coverage campaign

If ESPN follows baseball, TNT covers pro basketball and CNN handles news, what does the cable net Animal Planet stay on top of?

Dogs, of course.

The Discovery Networks web that's all animals, all the time announced Wednesday that it will be all over the 1998 dog show circuit beginning with the Baltimore Dog Show on May 3 and then the Houston Dog Show (Aug. 23) and the Phoenix Dog Show (Dec. 6) leading into the First Annual Animal Planet National Dog Championships early next year, when the top dog will be crowned. Or unleashed. Or whatever.

But that's not all. Animal Planet will regularly track the 30 American Kennel Club-sanctioned dog shows taking place around the U.S., allowing viewers to keep tabs on the stats and standings of Fido, Scratch and the rest of their favorite mutts.

Can rotisserie dog leagues be far behind?
