The Samuel Goldwyn Co. has acquired North American rights to Bigas Luna's fantasy romance "The Chambermaid and the Titanic" from UGC Intl.
The Spanish helmer's pic centers on the affair between a foundry worker and a ship's chambermaid on the eve of the Titanic's sailing.
Luna is best known for wild and demented fare such as "Jamon, Jamon" and "Golden Balls." "Chambermaid," however, was described by Goldwyn head of production and acquisitions John Bard Manulis as a "deeply felt love story told with humor, sensuality and suspense."
The Spanish-French-German co-production, which was produced by Yves Marmion, stars Romane Bohringer, Olivier Mar-tinez and Aitana Sanchez Gijon.
"Chambermaid" is Goldwyn's second acquisition since the company re-formed after its previous incarnation, Goldwyn Entertainment Co., was swallowed late last year by MGM. Goldwyn's other film is Tony Spiridakis' comedy "Tinseltown," starring Christy Swanson, Ron Perlman, David Dukes, Joe Pantolioni and Ayre Gross.
Goldwyn chief executive officer Meyer Gottlieb, Manulis and Goldwyn director of acquisitions and development Monica Chuo negotiated on behalf of Goldwyn. UGC was repped by its president Louisa Dent.
