Polygram nabs 'Noddy' vid

Beeb's first series created for North American market

MONTREAL -- Polygram Video has picked up exclusive North American homevideo rights to "Noddy," the first series ever created by the BBC specifically for the North American market.

Based on the bestselling series of children's books by British author Enid Blyton, the show is being produced in Toronto by BBC Worldwide, the Enid Blyton Co. and Canadian TV producers Catalyst Entertainment. The series is set to make its bow in October on PBS in the U.S. and on TVOntario and CBC in Canada.

The series was created by Rick Siggelkow, vice president of the children's division of BBC Worldwide and co-creator of the Emmy-winning PBS kids show "Shining Time Station." Targeted at children ages 3 to 7, each episode of "Noddy" will incorporate animation from the original "Noddy" animation series produced by the BBC in the early '90s. Forty episodes of the series are being produced, along with a one-hour Christmas special.

"Homevideo is one of the cornerstones in creating a successful children's property," said Siggelkow. "We are thrilled to have Polygram Video on board because of their sensitivity to the children's audience, respect for quality and their tremendous track record."

Added Bill Sondheim, president of Polygram Video: "This partnership demonstrates our continued commitment to developing our children's video category through association with established entertainment companies."
