Fox Sports Intl. earns shutout
Nabs exclusive soccer for Americas
The three-year pact, extending through the 2000-2001 campaign, was forged by FSI and Premier League reps Trans World Intl. (TWI) and Canal Plus. It marks the first time that Premier League contests are being made available to Fox Sports viewers throughout the Americas.
Deal wrests the international broadcast rights away from ESPN and makes FSI the exclusive Premier League source for the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Live coverage of the games begins in August.
As part of the agreement, the recently launched 24-hour Fox Sports World will likewise carry coverage of key soccer matches to Fox Sports owned-and-affiliated regional sports networks throughout North America.
The acquisition is "a clear indication that we are serious about building the Fox Sports brand and fueling our domestic and international cable and satellite channels with marquee product," said Tony Ball, prexy and CEO for Fox/Liberty Networks.
FSI is a partnership between News Corp., Liberty Media Corp. and Tele-Communications Inc.
