Miramax 'Dancing' with Intermedia

Agree to co-finance, co-distribute ensemble drama

Miramax Films and Intermedia Films have agreed to co-finance and co-distribute the ensemble drama "Dancing With Architecture."

The film, which is described as a "humorous and emotional multi-character drama," will be written and directed by Willard Carroll.

Miramax will distribute in the U.S. and the U.K. Intermedia will handle the rest of the world, with Miramax distributing in certain other territories yet to be decided. The low-budget film will begin shooting in May in L.A.

"Architecture" is an original screenplay written by Carroll, who is best known as a writer-producer of TV family fare such as "Journey Beneath the Sea," "The Monkey Prince" and "The Return of Mombi."

Carroll currently is in post-production on his latest feature, "Tom's Midnight Garden" -- starring Greta Scacchi, Joan Plowright and James Wilby -- which he wrote and directed.

Carroll and Wilhite are partnered in film and TV production company Hyperion Entertainment, which will produce "Architecture" along with Meg Liberman, a partner in Liberman Hirschfield Casting.

Miramax and Intermedia last collaborated on the Sundance opener "Sliding Doors," which was directed by Peter Howitt and stars Gwyneth Paltrow. "Doors," which was financed by Intermedia and Sydney Pollack's Mirage Enterprises, was jointly distributed in the U.S. by Miramax and Paramount Pictures, by Paramount in all other English-language territories and by Intermedia in the rest of the world.

The project was brought to Intermedia by Carroll's agent, Rosalie Swedlin of ICM. Intermedia in turn showed it to Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein at Sundance, and a deal was struck immediately.

Miramax was represented in the negotiations by Charles Layton; Intermedia by co-chairmen Guy East and Nigel Sinclair and Swedlin; and Hyperion by Swedlin.
