Press pack sparks interest

'Ferngully' flame kit does Beavis and Butt-head proud

So this press kit arrives in the mail this week touting the direct-to-video release of the animated "Ferngully 2: The Magical Rescue," the sequel to "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest."

As press kits go, it was mostly pretty standard fare -- you know, press releases, flattering press clippings, photo slides and a few pages of propaganda hyping Wild Brain Inc., the production outfit that made the $3.3 million "Ferngully 2."

But there was one minor item that seemed just a tad out of place in a kit designed to hawk a children's video: a book of Wild Brain matches.

Was this perhaps some attempt on the company's part to echo the sentiments of Beavis and Butt-head, who once famously (and regrettably) declared that "fire is cool!"?

"No," replied Marie Shell, who handles publicity and all match inquiries for the San Francisco-based company. "It was just a little fun thing we added to the kit. It has nothing to do with the film. We are not encouraging kids to use matches."

One marketing disaster averted.
