More than 143 million tickets, $807 mil take

BERLIN -- The German box office took in a record DM1.47 billion ($807 million) in 1997, representing an increase of 11.75% over the previous year. More than 143 million tickets were sold in 1997, the second-best result in 30 years.

These are some of the data released by the Berlin-based federal subsidy board FFA. German films also celebrated a strong year: Homegrown pics claimed a market share of 17.3% in 1997, up from 16.2% in 1996. Seven German pics sold more than a million tickets each.

At the same time, the boom in multiplex construction continues unabated in Germany. According to FFA statistics, 382 new screens opened in 1997, bringing the total number of screens in Germany to 4,284.
