Springer on bigscreen?

Feature pitch said to be making the rounds

Is America ready for "Jerry Springer -- The Movie"?

That horrifying prospect was making the rounds Wednesday amid speculation that the idea for a feature inspired by Springer's mega-popular syndicated flesh 'n' fisticuffs extravaganza is being pitched to various studios -- though it remained uncertain just what form that project might take, or if Springer would himself star a la Howard Stern.

It's also under consideration to have Springer's show travel from its Chicago home base to Los Angeles to tape at least a few installments locally for May sweeps, a possibility confirmed Wednesday by Don Corsini, VP and G.M. of KCAL (where Springer airs twice daily in L.A.).

Springer publicist Laurie Fried declined comment on the future of any film or Los Angeles junket. But she added, "I can tell you that Jerry will be hosting the Cannes special 'Sex on the Riviera' for E!."

At last, we can put that mystery to rest.
