Media Access nod to 'ER'

'Ellen', 'Port Charles' also awarded

The 16th Media Access Awards were handed out last night at the BevHilton Hotel, honoring individuals, TV shows and films which helped improve the image of people with disabilities or encouraged the employment of professionals with disabilities both on and off screen.

"ER" grabbed the drama series award, while "Ellen" took the comedy series honors for its "Ellen's Deaf Comedy Jam" episode.

Other TV honors went to "Port Charles" for daytime drama series, "Bong and Donnell" for children's program, and "Breaking Through" and "In the Gloaming" for movie of the week/miniseries.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Michael Landon Award for consistently advancing the positive portrayal of persons with disabilities to Wendy Riche, executive producer of ABC's "Port Charles."

Films cited were "Niagara, Niagara" and "Good Luck." "Breathing Lessons" and "Storm Reading" were honored in the docu/educational category.

Theater honors went to "Sweet Nothing in My Ear" and "Don't Buck With Me."
