Marques to top Globo sales

Adib steps down; successor looks to expand

MIAMI - Long-serving Globo sales topper Jorge Adib is to step down this spring and becoming a personal aide to the Brazilian media giant's CEO, Roberto Irineu Marinho.

Taking Adib's place will be Orlando Marques, currently Globo's director of communications. Marques has worked at several Sao Paulo-based media - including rival Abril - plus Editorial Globo, the Rio conglom's publishing arm.

Adib has spearheaded Globo Intl. programming sales expansion around the globe. According to Adib, annual sales now top $30 million, which would make Globo the No. 2 exporter of Latino product after Televisa subsid Protele.

Marques told Daily Variety that one of his tasks would be to expand the Globo Intl. catalog by acquiring third-party Latino product for overseas distribution and by seeking co-production partners.

"This will help to compensate the problem we are facing of more competition from novela producers," Marques said, adding that Globo Intl. needed more non-novela product to keep sales growing.

Globo Intl.'s traditional rivals have been Protele and Venezuelan distribs Coral and Venevision Intl. But the 1990s have seen companies enter the fray from Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru - plus Mexican player TV Azteca - all of which threaten to undercut the biz of established players.

Co-production would also help Globo duck under European quotas, Marques said. Globo has co-produced only rarely in recent years, with Portuguese affil SIC and Spain's RTVE.
