CBS adapts affil setup to web site

Takes novel approach to internet development

CBS Corp. may be a little late getting to the Internet, but at least it's taking a new tack on media Web sites.

The network announced Tuesday it is partnering with Silicon Valley heavyweight Oracle Corp. to make CBS.com reflect the affiliate nature of network TV.

CBS New Media G.M. Dean Daniels said that when the system is up and running Feb. 1, the Oracle-serviced main server in New York will make all of the network's resources available to custom-tailor a regional or local Web site to suit that area's particular needs, rather than concentrating all the assets in a central, national site.

"CBS understood the necessity of translating the affiliate distribution system to the Internet and was determined to extend its own Web presence and content to stations nationwide," Daniels added.

Oracle will supply its Network Computer systems to CBS and thereby cut the network's server and hardware budgets significantly, CBS exex noted. "Oracle has been a strategic partner throughout this process, allowing us to innovate and set new standards for the broadcasting industry," Daniels said.
