Exclusive auds in the mood for 'Love,' 'Shine'

NEW YORK - Woody Allen's first musical, "Everyone Says I Love You," vaulted to the top of the exclusives roster during a one-week Oscar-qualifying run.

The Miramax release scored $131,678 in three salons in Los Angeles and Gotham. It rang up a formidable $94,766 on a single screen at Sony Lincoln Square in New York.

Last week's leader, Fine Line's "Shine," fell to the No. 2 position on the roster. Scott Hicks' emotional drama about Australian pianist David Helfgott grossed $119,215 in seven theaters.

The third most popular limited-release film on both coasts was Miramax's "Swingers." Doug Liman's comic look at mating rituals picked up $64,347 in six nightspots.

Twentieth Century Fox's "The Crucible" showed legs in the second week of its New York run, with grosses of $54,761.

Joining the list on both coasts were Miramax's "The Substance of Fire" and CFP's "Losing Chase." Both had modest debuts, of $15,529 and $14,180, respectively.

Miramax's "Ridicule," which bowed last week in Gotham, arrived in L.A. The arch exploration of courtly manners rang up $19,494 on two screens on the West Coast.

Also bowing on the West Coast was CFP's "Hype!" The documentary about Seattle's grunge music scene brought in $8,478 in two concert halls.

The following are grosses of films playing on a limited number of screens in New York and Los Angeles.

Los Angeles

"Shine" (Fine Line) slipped 35% to $14,283 in its third at the Laemmle Monica, 20% to $12,966 in its third at the AMC Century 14, 37% to $12,795 in its third at the Cineplex Odeon Showcase and 42% to $7,969 in its second at the UA Westwood.

"Everyone Says I Love You" (Miramax) debuted with $26,653 at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and $10,259 at the AMC Century 14.

"Swingers" (Miramax) dropped 17% to $12,340 in its eighth at Cineplex Broadway, 34% to $9,657 in its eighth at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and 63% to $4,056 in its eighth at the UA Westwood.

"Ridicule" (Miramax) bowed to $10,596 at the Laemmle Music Hall and $8,898 at the Laemmle Monica.

"Sling Blade" (Miramax) fell 29% to $9,862 in its second at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

"Breaking the Waves" (October) dropped 41% to $9,354 in its third at the Laemmle Royal.

"Hype!'' (CFP) debuted with $6,081 at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and $2,397 at Mann Plaza.

"Big Night" (Rysher/Samuel Goldwyn) faded 57% to $3,039 in its 12th at the Mann Criterion 6 and 42% to $2,823 in its 12th at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

"The Substance of Fire" (Miramax) bowed to $5,215 at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

"Secrets & Lies" (October Films) fell 42% to $2,651 in its 10th at the Laemmle Monica and 24% to $2,142 in its 10th at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

"Beautiful Thing" (Sony Pictures Classics) gave up 44% to $4,754 in its sixth at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

"Bitter Sugar" (First Look) rose 19% to $4,649 in its third at the Laemmle Music Hall.

"Unhook the Stars" (Miramax) surrendered 38% to $3,378 in its sixth at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

"The Funeral" (October) slipped 15% to $2,474 in its fourth at the Cineplex Odeon Beverly Center.

"Adrenaline: Fear the Rush" (Legacy Releasing) debuted with $1,499 at the GCC Galaxy 6 and $792 at the Mann Festival.

"Microcosmos" (Miramax) fell 40% to $2,124 in its eighth at the Landmark NuWilshire.

"The Line King: Al Hirschfeld" (Castle Hill) debuted with $1,037 at the AMC Century 14 and $689 at the Mann Regent.

"The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" (Sony Pictures Classics) withered 56% to $1,634 in its fourth at the Laemmle Music Hall.

"Losing Chase" (CFP) bowed to $1,608 at the UA Westwood.

"Jude" (Gramercy) brought home $1,517 in its first at the Laemmle Monica.

"Lone Star" (Sony Pictures Classics) rang up $1,294 in its first at the Landmark NuWilshire.

"Surviving Picasso" (Warner Bros.) plunged 45% to $809 in its 11th at the AMC Fine Arts.

New York

"Everyone Says I Love You" debuted at Sony Lincoln Square with $94,766.

"Shine" slipped 12% to $36,816 in its third at Sony Lincoln Square, 8% to $20,202 in its second at the City Cinemas Angelika and 30% to $14,684 in its third at City Cinemas 1, 2 and Third Avenue.

"The Crucible" (20th Century Fox) faded 13% to $54,761 in its second at Sony Lincoln Square.

"Ridicule" dropped 18% to $15,817 in its second at Lincoln Plaza, 8% to $14,025 in its second at the City Cinemas Angelika and 22% to $10,242 in its second at City Cinemas 68th Street Playhouse.

"Swingers" gave up 26% to $14,070 in its eighth at the City Cinemas Angelika, 29% to $10,840 in its eighth at City Cinemas 1, 2 and Third Avenue and 20% to $9,760 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon 62nd and Broadway. It took in $3,624 in its first at the Loews State.

"Big Night" declined 39% to $4,577 in its third at the Cineplex Odeon Cinema 3 and 17% to $3,235 in its fifth at City Cinemas Village East.

"Secrets & Lies" gave up 36% to $8,160 in its 11th at Lincoln Plaza, 44% to $4,927 in its 11th at City Cinemas Eastside Playhouse and 27% to $4,100 in its second at the Screening Room.

"Breaking the Waves" fell 15% to $12,605 in its fourth at the City Cinemas Angelika.

"Losing Chase" debuted with $8,084 at the Quad and $4,488 at the Loews Orpheum Sevenplex.

"The Substance of Fire" bowed to $10,314 at the Cineplex Odeon Carnegie Hall.

"Looking for Richard" surrendered 42% to $5,920 in its ninth at Lincoln Plaza and 21% to $3,871 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon Waverly Twin.

"The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" slid 44% to $8,189 in its fifth at Lincoln Plaza.

"Sling Blade" moved ahead 6% to $7,803 in its second at Lincoln Plaza.

"The Funeral" surrendered 19% to $7,832 in its sixth at the City Cinemas Angelika.

"Microcosmos" faded 35% to $6,854 in its ninth at the Film Forum.

"Beautiful Thing" dropped 40% to $5,748 in its ninth at the Quad.

"Surviving Picasso" plunged 54% to $5,534 in its 12th at the Loews Paris.

"A Single Girl" (Strand Releasing) gave up 31% to $5,704 in its fourth at the Quad.

"Fire on the Mountain" (First Run) debuted with $4,980 at the Quad.

"Twelfth Night" decreased 37% to $3,450 in its seventh at the Cineplex Odeon Regency.

"Zero Kelvin" (Kino Intl.) faded 17% to $2,991 in its second at the Film Forum.

"Bitter Sugar" gave up 58% to $2,282 in its third at the Cineplex Odeon Carnegie Hall.

"The Proprietor" surrendered 60% to $1,172 in its eighth at the Cineplex Odeon Carnegie Hall.
