Marriott reaps 'Farm' project

Adaptation of Updike novel will be feature debut for Film Director's Program grad

Marc Marriott, a recent award winning grad of UCLA's Film Directors Program, will make his feature debut on "Of the Farm," an adaptation of the 1968 John Updike novel.

The picture is scripted by the late James Bridges ("The China Syndrome," "Urban Cowboy") and will be produced by Jack Larson, Bridges' longtime producing partner.

Larson was developing the project with Bridges before the screenwriter's death in 1993. Larson recently re-optioned the book and is prepping for a late sum-mer production start.

The drama centers on a tense weekend encounter between a widow and her only son, who returns to the family farm for a visit with his second wife and a stepchild.

Marriott, winner of the 1997 Bridges/Larson Award as the "most promising graduate director in the UCLA program," got the "Farm" on the strength of his 25 minute thesis film, "The Snow Child."
