Grundy has plans for Waterfront

Company could get new name, new projects

Cape Waterfront founder Herman Binge said his company is likely to be "redefined" under its new ownership by Pearson's Grundy subsidiary in South Africa.

Cape Waterfront may be renamed Grundy South Africa, though final details of the acquisition are still being worked out, Binge told Daily Variety.

Grundy Australia managing director Andrew Brooke said in a statement the acquisition "will establish our South African production operation in a market set for rapid expansion."

He added Grundy's philosophy was to combine its international experience with local expertise for mutual benefit to both parties.

Cape Waterfront founders Lindsay Reid-Ross and Herman Binge will become Pearson TV's senior executives in the region.

Jamie Bennett, chief exec of Pearson TV Worldwide Prods., said, "We are delighted to get into this exciting and developing market with two highly regarded and well established local producers, with access to a huge pool of untapped talent on both sides of the camera."

Cape Waterfront has been responsible for a number of productions for pubcaster SABC, and is currently in pre-production on a 13 part Xhosa series and a 10 hour Afrikaans series.

Adam Dawtrey in London contributed to this report.
