KCBS biggest winner at Golden Mike nods

KCBS and its "Action News" earned eight wins and three merit awards while KTTV's "Fox News" snared eight trophies and a single merit award in Division A of the Radio & Television News Assn. of Southern California's 1996 Golden Mike awards.

The KCBS wins came for weather segment, writing, spot news reporting, news reporting, hard news series reporting, light feature reporting, news videography feature series, videotape editing for hard news, with merit awards coming for live news coverage, news videography series and investigative reporting.

KTTV's wins included Golden Mikes for investigative reporting and news special (both won by reporter Chris Blatchford), serious feature reporting, sports feature reporting, news videography for both a single feature and feature series and videotape editing on both a single feature story and feature series. It also earned a merit award for live coverage of a breaking news story.

Other top winners included KCAL with five and KNBC with three. KTLA grabbed just one, for sports segment, while KABC's "Eyewitness News," in a blow, was shut out entirely.

Winners in other top news categories, including 60-minute and 30-minute newscasts airing between 4 p.m. and midnight, will be announced at a Feb. 1 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The finalists for those news awards include, for 60-minute newscast, KTTV, KNBC and KTLA. The 30-minutes-or-less finalists are KCBS, KNBC and San Diego station KFMB.
