Schwarzenegger, Shepherd share Golden Apple honors

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cybill Shepherd won Golden Apples as stars of the year Sunday at the annual Hollywood Women's Press Club Awards.

The awards, held at the Beverly Hilton, are a longtime institution in Hollywood and are now in their 56th year.

One reason is the concurrent rewarding of the Sour Apple, "given to the least cooperative entertainment figure of the year or the person who has brought dishonor to the industry." Dennis Rodman and Howard Stern tied in the voting. According to Golden Apple organizers, the only person to respond to the award was the sole Sour Apple nominee who did not win, Michael Jackson. His message: "I am sorry cannot be here in person, as I am currently in Japan for my HIStory World Tour and am hosting a holiday party for the employees of Star magazine tonight. Thank you very much for this award, and I wish all of you a very happy holiday season. I love you."

Winners of "discovery of the year" awards were Teri Hatcher and Greg Kinnear. Shirley MacLaine won the special Louella O. Parsons Award, and Buddy Rogers won the newly created Hollywood Legend Award. A special Golden Apple was given to Corinne Entratter Sidney.

Garry Marshall emceed the event.

The Middle-East International Film Festival kicks off this fall.
